Ultimately the only antidote to US propaganda is nationalism. Anyone in my country who is caught funded with US money may as well hang themselves they are electorally dead as a dodo.
This to be fair is why the CIA had to move suitcases with money instead of bragging about it on Fox News...

nationalism doesn't oppose US if US has bought all the nationalist movement (like f.e. in Ukraine circa 2014) - you get all the minuses of totalitarianism without all the bonuses of independence from US
The politically religious have no perspective of what they’re doing to these places. If you really pin them down, they think it’s everyone else that has changed. Wild.
I remember this came up during COVID. The government was worried that homeless people and illegals would be afraid to report symptoms. GPs are specifically free and don't have to ask for papers or insurance to combat these health crises.
Tammany Hall did not happen because they were immigrants it happened because someone thought it was a good idea to have people who could not even write their own name vote. Democracy hinges on a well educated populace who actually gives a shit- which as we all know has not and never will happen.

But they couldn’t read because they were poor immigrants to a country that at the time led the world in literacy. The literacy rate in New England for adult men was 90% in 1776. It’s not a surprise that New England probably remains the best governed part of the country.
And there are instances of democracy working well. Alexis de Tocqueville described a healthy democracy existing in the midwest in 1831. Tammany Hall was particularly bad and corrupt even by the standards of the time.
