i see your point and i want to tell you it's pretty much the same with cloud computing, which is so much more expensive than running your own hardware... and yet nobody's really questioning cloud computing (except the oxide people, but they're still tiny)

the company i work for could probably spent half its yearly cloud bill in hardware and be fine for 3-5 years.

guess who discovered the same thing and booted google cloud off their books? dhh

that guy is simply enlightened.

Even weird fascist broken clocks can be right every now and then.

As an Italian… F-cking finally.

I didn’t comment much on this whole topic but what I wondered is: why not Rocky Linux?

It’s quite literally the modern day CentOS

> AlmaLinux and RHEL remain the main supported Linux distributions across much of the organization

Alma and Rocky provide almost the same thing.

I suspect that at the time they had to make a decision, Rocky Linux was not in good enough state, so they went with Debian, and now they already standardized around Debian, so no need to change.

Debian is to be used for some legacy systems because RHEL introduced microarchitecture restrictions. Rest of their infra is on AlmaLinux (a RHEL-compatible distro ala Rocky).

CentOS was always the hosting companies OS, which is continued with Alma Linux. Rocky certainly not

I don’t care really.

It’s not news. AI was already being used that way. It’s just that now better ai is being used to do that.

To be 100% honest, fifteen years of woke this and woke that trying to urge me to be sad or angry for this and for that have largely desensitised me to most things.

AI is being used to target and bomb children? Such is life. It is what it is.

Are we the baddies?

...

Yes.

Ok - I am cool with that.

> Are we the baddies?

it's not like i'm the one using AI to do that. It's not correct to put me in the same bucket as the people performing the action

the real point (that you're likely missing) is that i don't care.

This was already posted and ignored at https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49751888 so i’ll ask the same question: again:

I don’t see any github link, is this 21st century embrace, extend, extinguish ?

>is this 21st century embrace, extend, extinguish

I assume here you're talking about Amazon's modus operandi?

ot reply, congrats

It's really not, Planetscale's CEO mentioned many times their reluctance with doing open source because of Amazon's practices.

it's a weak point if you think about it. there are licenses to protect against that.

grafana does that, for example, living at the two extremes:

- proprietary stuff for what they need to run in the cloud for their own managed services offering

- gplv3 for everybody else

so cool!

most things are "fine" if it's okay for you to break the law.

"tax fraud? a lot of people do it and it's just fine"

Maybe this is OT but I wonder if openai/anthropic have private versions of their models with wider context windows (4M tokens? 10M tokens?).

We know that the us government usually has private/custom versions of technology available to the general public, but much better.

I doub't it. The main issue is not cost, though they do get expensive as context grows, but intelligence. A frontier model like fable becomes as dumb as haiku after 200k tokens. They have been stuck at ~1M context/200k useful context for 18 months, now, with little sign of advancement. A model with a 10M context window that retains it's intelligence up to 2M tokens would be a big breakthrough.

> A model with a 10M context window that retains it's intelligence up to 2M tokens would be a big breakthrough.

so the true next frontier might not be just raw intelligence but rather larger context window?

Or better context curation - less lossy compression saving back to context. Maybe even jettisoning part context into an external semantic store instead of conpression. Or placing less data into context to start with.

Or a combination of all those things.

My vague understanding of the context window limitation is that it is largely a constraint of the model architecture. So maybe they have special extra long ctx, but it might just be a hard limit of the model itself.

> 1. did not call him "amazing"

you don't get to police how people talk or feel about other people, duh

You're illiterate. When some says 'did not do this' it is the same as 'I did not do this' and completely different from saying 'do not do this' to command someone else.

unless you are him?
